Solid state battery still faces many technical problems -Lithium - Ion Battery Equipment

At present, the development of pure electric vehicles has been shackled by the low battery energy density. Without a major breakthrough in battery energy density, the range of pure electric vehicles cannot be greatly improved. The development of pure electric vehicles will rely on policy support and lack market momentum.

Recently, Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology and Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences announced that the project of "all solid state battery", a leading nano project undertaken by it, has passed the acceptance. This technological progress will promote the large-scale application of all solid state lithium batteries in China.

The insiders said that the current single energy density of the ternary lithium battery is close to the limit, and it is difficult to make a big breakthrough. To further improve the energy density of the ternary lithium battery, it is necessary to further increase the proportion of nickel in the battery. However, after the proportion of nickel in the battery is increased, due to the poor thermal stability of high nickel, the thermal reaction inside the battery will be very intense, and the safety problem is worrying.(Lithium - Ion Battery Equipment)

Relying on the technical route of Sanyuanli battery, it is very difficult to achieve the goal of 350Wh/kg energy density of power battery. Therefore, the industry hopes to further improve the battery energy density by relying on solid state batteries.

Solid state battery is a kind of battery that uses solid electrode and solid electrolyte. Its solid electrolyte is nonflammable, non corrosive, non volatile and non leaking. It performs well at high temperatures and has higher safety. Solid state batteries will greatly reduce the probability of spontaneous combustion of electric vehicles.

More and more domestic and foreign enterprises and research institutions focus on all solid state lithium batteries. Volkswagen has announced that it plans to develop solid state batteries with a endurance of 1000km; Toyota expects to complete the research and development of solid state batteries in 2022, and plans to achieve mass production in 2030.

Electrolyte material is the core of all solid state lithium battery technology. At present, the research on solid state electrolyte mainly focuses on three categories of materials: polymer, oxide and sulfide. The polymer has good high temperature performance and has been commercially applied; The oxide cycle performance is good, suitable for thin film flexible structures; Sulfide has the highest conductivity, which is the main direction in the future.

However, solid-state batteries still face some technical difficulties. Solid electrolyte has high resistance, and there are technical challenges in conductivity, battery ratio, battery preparation efficiency, and cost control. In May this year, Toyota said that it expected to produce solid state batteries after 2020, but if it wanted to achieve mass production of solid state batteries, it would have to wait until 2030.
