Recently, the new power company of solid state battery, Telan New Energy, announced that its first semi-solid power lithium battery production line in Chongqing will be put into operation in October this year. Before that, Guoxuan Hi-Tech also announced a semi-solid battery, saying that it would be mass produced at the end of the year.

On June 1, the National Development and Reform Commission and other nine departments jointly issued the "Fourteenth Five-Year Plan" for the Development of Renewable Energy, which pointed out that it was necessary to develop and reserve high energy density energy storage technologies such as sodium ion batteries, liquid metal batteries, solid lithium batteries, metal-air batteries, and lithium sulfur batteries. Since this year, many companies have actively laid out semi-solid batteries. Will the new track of lithium battery be opened?

Longer endurance and safer

What is semi-solid battery? Bo Shouxing, associate professor of Michigan College of Shanghai Jiaotong University, introduced to the reporter: "The power lithium battery can be understood as a 'sandwich' structure, consisting of positive and negative electrodes at the top and bottom, with a diaphragm sandwiched between them. Yizhong company is actively developing semi-solid battery. "On the one hand, the liquid in the semi-solid battery is reduced, the weight of the battery is reduced, the stored energy is increased, and the energy density is increased; on the other hand, the solid electrolyte is nonflammable, and the semi-solid battery reduces the liquid, reduces the flammability, and greatly improves the safety." Bo Shouxing said.

Guoxuan Hi-Tech also told reporters that, "Solid and semi-solid technologies can significantly improve the energy density and significantly increase the battery life. In addition, semi-solid technology is also safer than traditional battery technology. At present, the energy density of Guoxuan Hi-Tech semi-solid battery cells can reach 360 watt hours/kg, and the range of loaded vehicles can reach 1000 kilometers. At the same time, Guoxuan Hi-Tech's semi-solid battery has passed the rigorous needle test and the hotbox test higher than the national standard."

Some insiders also believe that the gradual mass production of semi-solid battery will enhance industry confidence and attract more resources to invest in the research and development of this technology.

Compromise of multiple considerations

Previously, there was a view in the industry that "solid state battery is the final form of power lithium battery", but all-solid state battery still faces problems such as process technology, and its commercial application still needs to wait until 2025.

"Due to the characteristics of fast liquid migration, the ions can conduct rapidly between the positive and negative poles, so the charging speed of power lithium batteries is relatively fast, while the full solid electrolyte often cannot reach this speed, and the charging speed is poor." Bo Shouxing believes that the current market enthusiasm for semi-solid batteries is just a compromise, "It can not only improve the performance and safety, but also guarantee the key performance indicators of battery such as charging speed."

According to Ma Hongyun of Lishen Battery Research Institute, "The important reason why semi-solid battery is popular in the industry is that it uses solid-liquid mixed electrolyte. On the basis of improving the safety performance of the battery, it can be compatible with existing processes, equipment and materials to the greatest extent, and is a product with excellent comprehensive performance at this stage."
