Research Progress of Solid State Batteries Abroad -Lithium - Ion Battery Equipment
In July 2018, NEDO, a Japanese national research institute, announced that some Japanese enterprises (including 23 automobile, battery and material enterprises such as Toyota and Panasonic) and 15 academic institutions would jointly research and develop all solid state lithium batteries for electric vehicles in the next five years. At present, the second phase of solid-state lithium-ion battery research and development project has been launched, with an estimated investment of 10 billion yen (about 630 million yuan).
In terms of research progress of vehicle manufacturers, Toyota is in a leading position with its rich technical experience: in September 2018, Toyota disclosed its all solid state battery framework and plans to commercialize it in the early 1920s.
Toyota all solid state battery is based on the technology of reducing the internal resistance of solid state battery. With this technology, Toyota has increased the energy output density (by volume) of all solid state batteries to about 2.5kW/L. At the same time, the energy density was successfully increased to 400Wh/L, twice the energy density of lithium ion batteries produced around 2010.
However, the performance of Toyota's all solid state battery is far from that of the existing lithium ion battery. Therefore, in order to commercialize solid-state batteries as soon as possible, Toyota is working hard to improve their performance.
the republic of korea:
Korean enterprises choose to research and develop solid-state battery technology in groups:
In November 2018, it was reported that LG Chem, Samsung SDI and SKI, the three major battery manufacturers in South Korea, would jointly develop solid state batteries, lithium metal batteries and lithium sulfur batteries. In addition, they would set up a fund of 100 billion won (about 90 million US dollars) to build the next generation battery industry ecosystem.
Samsung SDI has already exhibited solid state batteries and battery modules based on 21700 cylindrical cells at the North American Auto Show in 2017; LG Chemical itself has a layout in the research and development of solid state batteries.
The vehicle manufacturer Hyundai Automobile chose to invest in material technology company - IonicMaterials, a start-up solid state battery material company located in Massachusetts, to lay out solid state batteries and promote the development of battery technology. According to insiders, Hyundai is developing solid state batteries through the battery R&D team of Nanyang R&D Center. At present, it has achieved a certain level of technology and is expected to achieve mass production of solid state batteries in 2025.(Lithium - Ion Battery Equipment)
Germany:
The German government has provided financial support for solid state battery research and development.
According to foreign media reports, in order to reduce the dependence of German car enterprises on battery suppliers from China, Japan and South Korea, German Chancellor Merkel will plan to allocate 1 billion euros to support a battery manufacturer in Germany, and will also fund a battery research and development institution to develop the next generation of solid-state batteries.
BMW: On the one hand, BMW is building its own battery research and development center to research and develop solid-state battery technology and is expected to achieve breakthrough progress in solid-state batteries in 2026 and then mass production. On the other hand, BMW is also actively cooperating with SolidPower in solid state batteries to rapidly improve battery research and development capabilities.
Volkswagen: The old car manufacturer Volkswagen has previously announced that it plans to independently produce solid state batteries, which may start mass production in 2024 or 2025, and the factory may be built in Europe or Germany. In addition, Volkswagen has also obtained the approval of the U.S. Foreign Investment Commission (CFIUS) to invest $100 million in QuantumScape, a battery technology company, to become the largest shareholder of QuantumScape and increase its shareholding. QuantumScape has more than 200 solid state battery technology patents and patent applications, which will provide strong help for the public to develop solid state batteries. The goal is to establish a solid state battery production line by 2025.
U.S.A:
In October 2018, Fisk announced that its new solid state lithium battery would only take 9 minutes to charge and would be mass produced. Since then, the company's solid-state battery technology has received investment from Caterpillar, a heavy machinery manufacturer, but the specific amount of investment has not been disclosed. Fisk said that the cost of Fisk flexible solid state battery, which is applying for patent, is less than $100 per kilowatt hour and can be used in construction, energy storage, transportation and mining industries. It is expected to be commercialized in 2018-2033.
britain:
In October 2018, Ricardo announced to cooperate with 4 institutions/enterprises to carry out the PowerDriveLine project, with the aim of establishing a pre-test line for solid-state batteries and developing a process for the supply chain of solid-state battery materials.
The project partners include Ilikatechnologies, CentreforProcessInnovation, Honda R&D Europe and University College London.
Australia:
In October 2018, MagnisResources Limited announced that its partner C4V (ChargeCCCV) had produced a prototype of solid state battery. The battery capacity of this prototype is currently 380Wh/kg and 700Wh/L, and it is estimated that further optimization can reach 400Wh/kg and 750Wh/L. The new battery reduces the production cost, does not need to use cobalt metal, and reduces the constraints.
C4V plans to start commercial production in the second quarter of 2019.
