Nissan advances all-solid-state battery technology -Lithium - Ion Battery Equipment
In addition to plans to bring more electrified new products to the market, the reserve and innovation of electric drive technology is also very important. In order to support the launch of a new round of electrified products, Nissan is also embarking on technological innovations, including all-solid-state battery (ASSB) technology. Not long ago, Nissan Motor Corporation announced a pilot production facility for laminated soft-pack all-solid-state battery (ASSB) cells, which is scheduled to be officially put into production in 2028.(Lithium - Ion Battery Equipment)
With the gradual advancement of Nissan's 2030 vision, Nissan will also usher in a new era of electric drive. As an advanced technology capable of changing the industry, Nissan's all-solid-state battery (ASSB) will further accelerate the popularization of electric vehicles. The energy density of all-solid-state batteries (ASSB) is nearly twice that of traditional lithium batteries, and it has excellent charging and discharging performance, which will further shorten the charging time.
Regarding this new battery technology, Mr. Mitsuhiro Doi, Vice President of Nissan Motor Company, Global Vice President of Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, and Director of the Research Institute, said: "The advantages of vehicles equipped with all-solid-state batteries are high energy density and driving range. It is longer and reduces the weight of the battery under the same mileage. In addition, the fast charging performance is very good, and it is necessary to improve the fast charging performance in the future, including my country. Fast charging can be achieved even in high temperature conditions, and consumers are using electric vehicles. more convenient."
At the same time, in actual use, the battery will be embedded in the vehicle in the form of a battery pack. The traditional liquid lithium battery can be used at a temperature of 60° and 70°, but an all-solid-state battery can be used even at a high temperature of about 100°. All can be used, so the cooling process of the battery pack can be reduced, making the battery pack lighter and smaller, which is also the advantage of all-solid-state batteries (ASSB).
In addition, Nissan will also independently develop and manufacture the high-precision, high-speed electrode stacking technology accumulated in the pouch lithium battery mounted on the Nissan LEAF, and apply it to the research and development of all-solid-state batteries. Mr. Doi Sanhao introduced that in all-solid-state batteries, solids and solids should be uniformly mixed, and it is very important to maintain equal pressure between solids and solids. This is a brand-new technology. Because the electrolyte of liquid lithium battery is liquid, the conductivity of ions is very good.
As Mr. Doi Sanhao said, in an all-solid-state battery, the electrolyte becomes a solid state. In order to ensure the ionic conductivity between the solid state and the solid state, the cell material, cell design, and production process must be confirmed one by one. A whole new challenge. Moreover, unlike liquid batteries, all-solid-state batteries have their own interfaces between the positive electrode and the electrolyte, and between the electrolyte and the negative electrode, but the all-solid-state battery requires artificial interfaces. In liquid batteries, SEI film, CI film, etc. will naturally be formed during charging and discharging, but for all-solid-state batteries, it is necessary to process a film for it first, so the cost of production technology and materials will also be increased.
However, according to Doi Sanhao, due to the high energy density of the all-solid-state battery itself, with the increase of the energy density per unit volume, Nissan can realize the miniaturization of the battery and reduce the use of raw materials. At the same time, one of the advantages of all-solid-state batteries is that they can choose from a wealth of materials. Nissan is also considering cobalt-free or cobalt-less methods to reduce the use of rare metals to reduce raw material costs. In terms of production processes, Nissan is also looking for ways to reduce and control costs.
