Solid Energy Systems, a division of MIT, has developed a new type of lithium metal battery, which is not only smaller, but also has twice the power supply capacity of the lithium ion battery widely used at present. According to Qichao Hu, the founder of the company, the secret of this battery is that it has a very thin high-energy lithium metal foil, which has more ions than widely used graphite. More ions means more energy capacity. The energy density of this battery is twice that of lithium ion battery. They are also safer and easier to recharge.

Qichao Hu said: "As the energy density is twice that of lithium ion batteries, we only need to reduce the battery size by half to reach the current level. We can also use the same size to obtain twice the continuous power supply time. Moreover, SolidEnergy has found a way to directly manufacture such batteries through existing lithium ion manufacturing machines. In its early days, the existence of this company has been covered up by A123 Systems, a lithium battery derivative company of MIT. Not only that, A123 Systems filed for bankruptcy in 2012, so even though Hu has made a better product, it is difficult for investors not to have a grudge.

Interestingly, the unfortunate experience of A123 made Hu develop products in the headquarters where he was abandoned. One year later, Solid Energy Systems won the accelerator competition of the MIT Entrepreneurial Competition with a bonus of 100000 dollars (although in fact, it only got 12000 dollars).

He said: "However, the research and development in the old factory of A123 enables us to use materials that can be directly used in the existing production line. From the perspective of understanding the real manufacturing industry, manufacturing real batteries enables us to understand which materials can be used in these processes, thus helping us design new materials."
