New formula to prevent lithium batteries from catching fire -Lithium - Ion Battery Equipment



According to foreign media "Arstechnica", physicist Gabriel Veith was inspired by a substance called oobleck to develop a new chemical formula to prevent lithium batteries from catching fire.

Generally speaking, the two electrodes of a lithium battery are separated by a thin piece of plastic. When the thin plastic is squeezed and ruptured, the two electrodes come into contact, causing the battery to short-circuit and eventually cause an explosion. Although a non-flammable solid electrolyte could solve the problem, the production model would have to change significantly, and the average manufacturer would be reluctant to invest such a large amount of money.(Lithium - Ion Battery Equipment)

The property of oobleck is that it hardens when subjected to external pressure and softens when the energy is dissipated. Gabriel Weiss therefore thought of putting spherical silica nanoparticles with the same properties in the liquid electrolyte of ordinary lithium batteries to prevent the two poles from contacting when squeezed. The new formula will reduce battery capacity and slow down charging, but otherwise, is no different from current lithium batteries.
