Lithium battery makes breakthrough in car battery life technology -Lithium - Ion Battery Equipment
University of Waterloo researchers recently released a report saying that new technologies may significantly enhance the storage capacity of batteries. The new technique uses lithium metal to create the negative electrode, which is said to greatly increase the amount of electricity stored. Research director Quanquan Pang said the battery is cheap, safe and can be used for a long time. If new batteries are installed, the electric car's range can be extended from 200 kilometers to 600 kilometers.(Lithium - Ion Battery Equipment)
The researchers made a compound of phosphorus and sulfur and put it into a liquid electrolyte, which would carry an electric charge in the battery. Inside the battery, the compound reacts with the lithium metal electrode, which then automatically forms a protective layer. Having a protective layer solves two problems: the battery won't catch fire and explode; and we can know if the electrodes are good and how long they will last.
"We wanted to find a simple and stable technology to protect lithium metal," said Pang Quanquan. "With this technology, we just need to add a compound and it will work automatically."
