Japanese universities develop large capacity lithium batteries -Lithium - Ion Battery Equipment

According to foreign media reports, researchers at Shinshu University in Nagano in Japan are developing a thin, high-capacity lithium-ion battery, which may open a new research field of electric vehicle energy storage system.

Lithium ion battery can store a large amount of electric energy, but its storage capacity will decline with the extension of service time. In order to deal with this problem, Zettsu and his colleagues examined the electrical and electrochemical properties of the high-voltage (>4.8V, vsLi+/Li) cathode, because electrons enter the battery cell from the cathode.

Zettsu also uses self-assembled monolayers to adjust the battery surface, which may become a new research trend. His team coated the cathode surface with ultra-thin fluoroalkyl silane, which is a silicon material that can arrange its own molecules most efficiently, transmit lithium ions and insulate electrons, while retaining an atomic layer.

The researchers saw that the direct contact between the cathode and the electrolyte was reduced to the lowest extent. Even if it was used hundreds of times, the battery capacity would not decline.

Zettsu said: "The self-assembled monolayer accumulation coating can reduce the activation barrier during lithium ion transport and stabilize the ions near the surface, which will be affected by the electrochemical reaction at the electrode electrolyte interface It is an important technology for the research and development of high-voltage cathode materials, and there is no limitation that it is difficult to give consideration to both efficiency and stability. "

However, Zettsu said that the impact of surface coating on the whole battery system needs to be examined in detail to better understand any potential negative side effects.

Zettsu plans to put this technology into the market in 2022. Xinzhou University will cooperate with car enterprises and battery manufacturers to create more environment-friendly high-energy batteries.

Zettsu said: "Due to the requirements of global environmental protection laws and regulations, the global automotive industry is vigorously developing pure electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles, which is the general trend. To this end, it is necessary to provide lithium ion batteries with excellent performance for electric vehicles. At present, the company is committed to making battery cells for plug-in hybrid vehicles and pure electric vehicles with coating processing technology and conducting automatic driving tests."(Lithium - Ion Battery Equipment)
