Hitachi successfully develops new battery technology -Lithium - Ion Battery Equipment



On December 30, Beijing time, it was reported that Maxell, a battery manufacturing subsidiary of Hitachi Group, recently announced that it had developed a new lithium-ion battery technology, which could double the power consumption without changing the battery size.

It is reported that Hitachi uses a newly developed silicon based material to form the battery cathode, which can double the battery density. At the Second Wearable Expo in Tokyo held from January 13 to 15, 2016, Hitachi will display lithium-ion batteries made with new technologies.

Hitachi calls the new technology "ULSiON", which uses "SiO-C" as the negative electrode active material. SiO-C is a composite material coated with carbon on the surface of SiO. For a long time, using silicon as the active material of negative electrode has been faced with a problem. When charging and discharging, there will be expansion and contraction. The task of researchers is to reduce its expansion and contraction to a certain level. Hitachi has now solved this problem.

By using new materials, Hitachi can compress the width of the lithium-ion battery to 13 mm or even smaller. Under the same size, the energy density of the new battery is twice as high. The new battery can also be charged at different voltages. Hitachi expects that the discharge termination voltage of the battery will be reduced to 2.0V. Under low voltage, the discharge curve of battery made by new technology is more stable. Hitachi has put new batteries into commercial products, such as smartphones. The new battery can also form a laminated battery for use in wearable devices. In some small devices, only small batteries can be used, and the market demand for new Hitachi batteries will become great in the future.
