Formula of low cobalt active cathode for lithium battery of Cabot Company -Lithium - Ion Battery Equipment
Cobalt is a key material with high price, which is mainly imported from the United States. With the vigorous development of electric vehicles, there is a certain supply risk in the future. Cabot's R&D project aims to explore more sustainable and affordable alternative materials, and ultimately improve the accessibility of electric vehicle technology.
The US Department of Energy has invested in 42 projects to support advanced vehicle technologies, realize affordable mobile travel services, strengthen their energy security, reduce their dependence on key raw materials, and thus enhance the economic growth of the United States. The US Department of Energy allocated 80 million US dollars for this purpose, of which nearly 32 million US dollars were used for the research and development of battery and vehicle electrification innovation, while Cabot obtained 2.9 million US dollars for the research and development of aerosol manufacturing technology for low cobalt lithium ion battery cathode.(Lithium - Ion Battery Equipment)
Miodrag Oljaca, technical director of Cabot Energy Materials Department, said that the company has established its position in the battery industry through its conductive additive formula and aluminas used for cathode and separator. The company is eager to use its innovative processing technology and material expertise to further realize the technological innovation of the new generation of batteries, realize the low cobalt battery or low cobalt cathode formula, and promote the production of low-cost and sustainable electric vehicle batteries, energy storage equipment and other applications.
Cabot will cooperate with researchers from Argonne National Lab and SAFT. The former will provide assistance in the synthesis of low cobalt cathode complex, while the latter will provide assistance in battery manufacturing, aiming to verify the performance of the new low cobalt cathode formula.
