Development direction of lithium battery technology -Lithium - Ion Battery Equipment

In recent years, with the rapid development of the electric vehicle industry at home and abroad, power lithium battery companies not only have to expand production scale to ensure production supply, but also face the "tough battle" to continuously improve key indicators such as product energy density.

Recently, Ouyang Minggao, executive vice chairman of my country Electric Vehicle 100 Association and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, responded to the above-mentioned key topics of concern to the industry from a technical perspective, providing an important reference for people inside and outside the industry to fully understand the current level of power lithium battery technology.

300 Wh/kg target made a major breakthrough

Reporter: How is the current progress of domestic power lithium battery technology in terms of safety, long driving range and long life? What indicators are achieved?

Ouyang Minggao: According to the plan, in 2020, the energy density of power lithium batteries will be 300 Wh/kg. At present, there are three teams undertaking special projects for new energy vehicles: CATL New Energy, Tianjin Lishen and Hefei Guoxuan. The technical routes currently adopted by the three teams are similar, that is, the positive electrode is made of high nickel ternary, and the negative electrode is silicon carbon. The current technical indicators of this battery are close to the application requirements. By 2020, the industry of batteries with a specific energy of 300 Wh/kg Substantial breakthroughs have been made in the chemical industry, and now they have been achieved from the perspective of specific energy. For example, the cycle life of the battery research results of CATL New Energy is basically about 1000 times, and the energy density reaches 304 Wh/kg, and the other two are similar. Of course, there are still some company security standards that have not been fully met. A battery system of 200-210 Wh/kg can be made with a single battery of 300 Wh/kg, because it is basically a soft-pack lithium battery, not a square battery. In China, at the end of last year and the beginning of this year, the energy density of power lithium batteries reached about 230 watt-hours/kg, and the system was about 150 watt-hours/kg. In 2018 and 2019, it will increase by 50-70 Wh/kg, which I think can be done. As for the monomer 350Wh/kg, the system 260Wh/kg is our goal.(Lithium - Ion Battery Equipment)

How to implement the target of 400 Wh/kg by 2025?

Reporter: What goal do you think the power lithium battery will strive to achieve by 2025? What technical route will be adopted? Which forward-looking technology do you think is most worthy of attention, and what is the domestic progress?

Ouyang Minggao: Facing the industrialization in 2025, we hope to hit the target of 400 Wh/kg of single battery energy density. The realization of 300 Wh/kg changes the negative electrode, from carbon to silicon carbon, to 400 Wh/kg, the change is the positive electrode. Currently, there are several optional positive electrode materials, and now a breakthrough has been made in the key special projects of new energy vehicles. The most advanced is the high-capacity lithium-rich manganese-based cathode material. Two units have undertaken cutting-edge basic projects. One is the Institute of Physics, which has improved the voltage decay of lithium-rich manganese-based cathode cycling. The target achieved is the voltage after 100 cycles of cathode cycling. The attenuation has dropped to within 2%, which is a significant development. The other is a team from Peking University, which has developed a lithium-rich manganese-based cathode with a specific capacity of 400 mAh/g for the first time. It should be no problem to achieve 400 Wh/kg, and it may even be higher. This makes it possible to develop new lithium batteries with a specific energy greater than 500 Wh/kg, but there is still some uncertainty in the cycle.

A more cutting-edge technology is solid-state batteries. At present, there are many research institutions and industrial units in China, including the Qingdao Energy Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Ningbo Institute of Materials, the Institute of Physics, etc., as well as CATL New Energy, AVIC Lithium Battery, etc. Recently, Ningbo Institute of Materials and Ganfeng Lithium Co., Ltd. have invested 500 million yuan to promote the industrialization of solid-state batteries. It plans to mass production in 2019 and enter the electric vehicle market in 2020. Solid-state battery is undoubtedly the hottest technical term in the global battery field in 2017.
