CATL does not contain nickel or cobalt batteries -Lithium - Ion Battery Equipment
Meng Xiangfeng, assistant chairman of CATL, said at the China Automotive Forum that the company is developing a new type of drive battery without nickel and cobalt. This new type of battery will be different from the existing NCA, NCM and LFP batteries, and will not use nickel or cobalt and other expensive metals.
CATL has been doing continuous research on solid state batteries and cobalt-free batteries, which are concerned by the industry. In Meng Xiangfeng's view, the cycle life of solid state batteries is the largest short board of solid state batteries at present. The company has achieved 900 cycles, with a decline of less than 10%.
In terms of cobalt-free battery, CATL also made relevant layout a long time ago, but the company did not carry out too much publicity for this concept. In addition to the solid state battery and cobalt-free battery known by the industry, CATL has started to lay out the next generation of non-rare metal battery, which can not only be cobalt-free, but also be replaced by nickel, so as to further improve the vehicle's endurance and significantly reduce the cost.(Lithium - Ion Battery Equipment)
Nickel and cobalt are the most critical components in the current mainstream vehicle-driven batteries. Both Japanese Panasonic, Korean LG Chemical and other battery manufacturers are committed to reducing the use of expensive cobalt in nickel-cobalt aluminum (NCA) batteries or nickel-cobalt manganese (NCM) batteries.
Elon Musk, the head of TSLA, also spoke for related technologies last month, urging mining companies to produce more nickel, and warned that the current battery cost was still a major obstacle to the company's performance.
Meng Xiangfeng did not disclose the composition and cost details of the new battery at the meeting site. According to him, CATL is still developing a separate technology to directly integrate the battery into the frame of the electric vehicle to expand the driving range.
