"All resin battery" developed in Japan -Lithium - Ion Battery Equipment

According to the Japanese Economic News recently, Sanyo Chemical Industry and start-ups from Keio University are actively researching and developing. The "all resin battery", which uses resin to replace metal as a battery component to avoid fire, is expected to start mass production as early as the autumn of 2021. In this way, we will catch up with all solid state batteries and air batteries that are currently leading in the research and development competition of new generation batteries.(Lithium - Ion Battery Equipment)

Sanyo Huacheng will contribute to APB, a battery start-up. APB was founded by Yingming Horie, a special professor of the Graduate School of Keio University in Japan. He once led the research and development of lithium ion battery for LEAF, a pure electric vehicle (EV) in Nissan. He also proposed the R&D plan of "all resin battery" to fundamentally prevent fire accidents by eliminating the metal in battery structures.

Sanyo Chemical has mastered the production technology of toner for office compound machine and paper diaper material, and will rely on this technology to produce gel resin as the basic material of all resin battery. The company has cooperated with chemical manufacturers and production equipment manufacturers, established the production method of all resin battery, and started to supply trial products in the direction of mass production.

The all resin battery is wrapped with electrode materials such as lithium by gel resin containing electrolyte as the positive and negative electrodes of the battery. Its feature is that even in the fully charged state, no matter drilling or cutting, there will be no fire. The production cost is expected to be below 12 yen per watt hour, lower than 15-20 yen for traditional lithium-ion batteries.

At present, the widely used lithium-ion battery was developed by Akira Yoshino of Asahi Kasei, Japan, and Sony realized commercialization in 1991. Recently, the competition around the new generation battery has become more intense, because the performance improvement of traditional products has reached the limit. For example, fire accidents caused by batteries cannot be eliminated on mobile devices. In addition, if you want to drive pure electric vehicles and unmanned aerial vehicles for a long time, it is difficult to meet the requirements only by relying on the capacity of traditional batteries.

At present, the most concerned new generation battery is "all solid state battery". TDK started its first mass production in the world in 2018 by using ceramic type, and Toyota Motor and Murata Manufacturing Institute are also vigorously researching and developing. However, most people believe that the formal popularization will be around 2030.
